A man who attacked and raped a woman in Malmö has been jailed and banned from returning to Sweden for a decade, after he was caught in Finland and extradited. The woman reported to police in November last year that the man, whom she had never before met, had approached her shortly after 2am at the Möllevången square in southern Sweden's largest city. He followed her and kept touching her even though she tried to reject his advances, then raped her. On Monday, Malmö District Court found a 37-year-old Tunisian man guilty of rape and sentenced him to two and a half years in jail, after which he is to be deported with a ten-year ban on returning to Sweden. The man was identified with the help of witness statements after police released security camera footage which showed him approaching the woman, and later running from the scene. The Greek Minister of Migration, Dimitris Vitsas, revealed on Friday that the influx of migrants over the land border with Turkey increased by almost 300 percent in 2018 compared to the previous year. There was an increase of 10 percent in migration to the Aegean islands during the same period. Vitsas said that a total of 47,929 migrants arrived in Greece in 2018 compared to 34,707 in 2017. Of that number, 32,155 individuals landed on the islands, while 15,814 went across the Evros River along the land border with Turkey. Spanish police have smashed a Bangladeshi-run ring which smuggled more than 350 migrants from the Indian subcontinent into the country and gave them fake passports. A 17-year-old girl was seriously injured in Minden, Germany after a drunk Afghan refugee dragged her off a bus by her hair, causing her to be run over while trying to escape the man.
