Shouts of “dictatorship” were heard as one of the leaders of France’s anti-government Yellow Vest movement was arrested in Paris late on Wednesday, after authorities charged him with organizing and leading an unauthorized protest. Eric Drouet was detained by police as some of the movement’s supporters gathered in the capital’s Place de la Concorde, near the iconic Arc de Triomphe monument. People left candles in remembrance of the movement’s wounded in clashes with police. Drouet was detained while reportedly en-route to the memorial. Footage of the arrest shows several French riot police escort him away from the crowds while supporters chant his name while he is being led away. After that, several other protesters were grabbed from the crowd and led away by police while remaining Yellow Vests sang the national anthem. The Yellow Vest movement reached Ireland this past Saturday (15/12/18), with approximately 200 people taking to the streets of Dublin in hi-vis vests, protesting among other things, the government of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, and his regime of nanny-statism and extortionate taxation. However, at the demonstration, there was a clear divide between two different groups, roughly half and half in number. One group consisted of normal everyday Janes and Joes, new to street activism. The other, consisted of the usual bunch of Far Left types such as People Before Profit and #TakeBackTheCity activists. Neither side cooperated well, in chanting or even when it came to marching in the correct direction. Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has rejected claims he has signed up to a 'cowardice-and-surrender' deal with Fine Gael which risks destroying his party after a colleague hit out at the spring 2020 confidence and supply deal extension. Mr Martin defended the criticism, by insisting the deepening Brexit crisis had left him with no other option than to put the country first, after Deputy John McGuinness said the deal risks putting the party "in a straitjacket".
